What is a “pot boiler?”

Our June discussion will be on “Potboilers.” Which led me to find out what exactly that is….

A pot boiler (sometimes called an airport novel) is generally considered to be a work of fiction of a low artistic quality written solely for the purpose of earning the writer money. They are usually high-paced, predictable, easy to ready novels which are targeted at a broad audience so that they generate high sales.

An example would be James Patterson who churns out a few best-selling novels a year, and has sold more than 270 million books.
